Ask any working gemologist which single instrument they could not live without. Almost all of them will say the refractometer. A refractive index (RI) reading is the single most specific, most reproducible, and most useful measurement you can make on a gem. It narrows identification from "could be dozens of things" to "can only be one of two or three things" in under a minute. No gem identification should be considered complete without one.

What Is Refractive Index?

Refractive index is a measure of how much a material slows down light as it enters. Air has an RI of 1.000. Water is 1.333. Most gemstones fall between 1.43 (fluorite) and 2.42 (diamond). The RI is a physical constant — it is the same for all specimens of the same mineral species, regardless of colour, cut, or origin. Quartz is always 1.544–1.553. Ceylon blue sapphire and yellow sapphire are both corundum: always 1.762–1.770. This makes RI an exceptionally reliable identification tool.

Step-by-Step: How to Take a Refractometer Reading

  1. Clean the gem. The facet that will contact the refractometer glass must be free of oil, dirt, and fingerprints. Use a clean microfiber cloth. Polishing cloths →
  2. Apply one small drop of RI contact liquid to the glass hemisphere (the flat glass prism) of the refractometer. One drop is enough — excess liquid blurs the reading.
  3. Place the gem table-down (largest flat facet down) onto the liquid on the glass. Press gently to spread the liquid evenly. The flat facet must be in full optical contact with the glass.
  4. Look through the eyepiece toward a bright light source (window or lamp). You will see a numbered scale from approximately 1.40 to 1.81.
  5. Read the shadow edge. You will see a distinct line between a light and dark zone. The number at this edge is the refractive index of your gem. For doubly refractive gems, you will see two shadow edges — read both numbers. The difference between them is the birefringence.
  6. Check against the reference table. Match your reading to known RI values. A reading of 1.762–1.770 confirms corundum (sapphire or ruby). A reading of 1.544–1.553 confirms quartz.
  7. Clean the glass prism immediately after use with a dry microfiber cloth. Never leave RI liquid to dry on the glass — it can stain.

Important Limitations to Know

The 1.81 ceiling: Standard refractometers cannot measure RI values above 1.81 — which is the RI of the contact liquid. Gems with very high RI (diamond at 2.417, high-type zircon up to 1.984) will show no shadow edge, or a shadow that covers the entire scale. For these, use a Presidium PRIM II or a diamond thermal probe.

You need a flat facet: Refractometers work only on flat, polished surfaces. Rough gems, heavily included gems, and gems with poorly polished facets give unreliable readings. Cabochons and rounded stones give a "spot reading" via the distant vision method — a different technique with lower precision.

Readings require a good light source: Work in front of a north-facing window or use the built-in LED if your refractometer has one. Fluorescent room lighting and direct sunlight can both degrade the sharpness of the shadow edge.
