The gem mining of Sri Lanka is one of the oldest and most remarkable continuous industries in the world. For more than two thousand years — from ancient kingdoms to the present day — men have been digging into the alluvial gravels of Ratnapura, washing buckets of mud and gravel in wooden trays, and lifting out the rough stones that become the sapphires, rubies, and cat's eyes prized in the jewellery capitals of the world. The methods have changed surprisingly little.
Understanding how Ceylon gems are mined gives a buyer important context — it explains why natural Ceylon gems are genuinely rare, why the mining tradition carries ethical credentials that industrial mining cannot match, and why the stones that reach the international market represent the end of a long, labour-intensive journey from the earth.
Sri Lanka sits on some of the oldest rocks on earth — a Precambrian basement complex estimated at 500 million to 2 billion years old. These ancient metamorphic and crystalline rocks were formed under conditions of extreme heat and pressure deep in the earth's crust. The prolonged geological history created ideal conditions for the formation of corundum (sapphire and ruby), chrysoberyl (cat's eye and alexandrite), and many other gem minerals.
Over millions of years, erosion and weathering broke down these gem-bearing rocks and concentrated the gem minerals — which are harder and denser than most surrounding rock — into alluvial deposits along river valleys and flood plains. Today, most of Sri Lanka's gem mining takes place in these alluvial deposits, particularly in the Sabaragamuwa Province centred on Ratnapura, and in the North Central Province around Elahera and Okkampitiya.
The dominant mining method in Sri Lanka is illam pitting — a traditional alluvial mining technique that has been used for centuries with minimal modification. An illam is the gem-bearing gravel layer found beneath layers of clay and topsoil, typically at depths of 3 to 15 metres. Finding it requires experience and a degree of luck; experienced miners can read the landscape to predict where gem-bearing gravels are likely to be concentrated.
A mining pit — typically circular or rectangular, about 2 to 4 metres across — is dug by hand down to the illam layer. Wooden planks or bamboo poles support the pit walls. As the pit deepens, a simple hand pump or bucket-and-pulley system removes groundwater — in the wet lowlands of Ratnapura, water ingress is a constant challenge. When the illam layer is reached, workers fill baskets with the gravel and haul them to the surface.
The illam gravel is washed in a shallow wooden tray called a "nambiya" — a wide, circular basin that the worker fills with gravel and water and then spins in a circular motion while gradually tilting it. This swirling action separates the lighter clay and sand from the heavier gravel, and the gem minerals — which are denser than most other materials in the gravel — concentrate at the centre of the tray.
The residue at the centre of the nambiya after washing is then sorted by hand, pebble by pebble, by an experienced sorter. Ceylon gem miners can identify rough gem material remarkably quickly by eye — sapphire rough has a distinctive greasy luster and characteristic crystal form that experienced eyes recognise immediately even in the rough and often dirty state in which it emerges from the gravel.
Rough gem material identified at the wash is taken to local gem dealers or cutters. Sri Lanka has a strong tradition of gem cutting, concentrated in Ratnapura and Colombo. Cutters assess the rough — evaluating its colour, transparency, crystal orientation, and inclusions — to determine the best shape and size that can be cut from it. This decision involves balancing yield (how much carat weight is preserved) against beauty (how well the cut stone will display its colour and any optical phenomena).
Sri Lanka's gem cutters are particularly skilled at cutting star sapphires and cat's eyes — gems that require precise orientation of the crystal to centre the star or the chatoyant ray at the dome's apex. This traditional knowledge is passed from generation to generation and represents an irreplaceable craft skill.
Traditional alluvial gem mining in Sri Lanka is, by the standards of the global mining industry, remarkably low-impact. Pits are small and dug by hand. No heavy machinery tears up vast areas of land. No toxic chemicals are used to separate gems from rock. When a pit is exhausted, it is typically backfilled and the land returns to agricultural use relatively quickly.
Most mining is done by small family groups or village cooperatives who share the proceeds. The National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) of Sri Lanka regulates gem mining through a licensing system, requiring miners to obtain permits and export certificates. While enforcement is imperfect, the regulatory framework is more developed than in most gem-producing countries.
For the buyer, this context matters. A certified Ceylon gemstone is the product of a thousands-year-old artisanal tradition, extracted by hand from the earth, sorted grain by grain, and shaped by craftsmen whose skills represent one of Sri Lanka's most significant cultural heritages.
