There is one gemstone that makes even experienced gem dealers stop and stare. It is not the largest sapphire, nor the most famous. It is a stone with no universally agreed definition, a colour that cannot quite be named, and a price that can exceed fine ruby or emerald. Its name — padparadscha — comes from the Sinhalese word for lotus blossom, and its colour is precisely that: the delicate, warm glow of a lotus flower at sunrise, somewhere between orange and pink, belonging fully to neither.
Padparadscha sapphires are the rarest variety of corundum available on the open market. Sri Lanka — Ceylon — is their original and most prestigious source. A genuine, certified padparadscha from Ceylon, untreated, above two carats, is genuinely one of the rarest gem purchases a collector can make. This guide covers everything: what padparadscha actually is, how labs define it, what it costs, where it comes from, and the critical questions to ask before spending serious money on one.
A padparadscha is a variety of corundum (the mineral species that also produces ruby and all other sapphires) whose colour is a delicate, balanced mixture of pink and orange. The name derives from the Sinhalese/Sanskrit padmaraga, meaning "lotus coloured." The colour should evoke the petal of a lotus flower — warm, gentle, neither orange alone nor pink alone, but a specific harmony of both.
This sounds straightforward. In practice, it is one of the most contested definitions in gemology. The Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee (LMHC) — a body representing GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, and other major labs — defines padparadscha as a sapphire with "a subtle mixture of pink and orange in light to medium tones." Critically, tone matters: too dark, and it becomes an orange sapphire; too pale, and it is merely a pink sapphire. The colour must be balanced and occupy a specific, fairly narrow window.
A further complication introduced in recent years is colour stability. Some sapphires — particularly from Madagascar — show an attractive pinkish-orange colour under certain lighting but fade or shift over time due to "trapped-hole colour centres." GIA, SSEF, and AGL now test for this. A stone that fails the stability test will not be called padparadscha regardless of its colour under normal conditions. Always ask specifically whether a padparadscha certificate includes a colour stability assessment.
The original source of padparadscha is Sri Lanka, and many gemologists and purists still hold that the term should apply only to stones from Ceylon. Sri Lankan padparadschas typically show the most balanced, delicate pink-orange — the closest to the classic lotus flower ideal. They also tend to have excellent clarity, which matters because the pastel tone of a padparadscha makes inclusions far more visible than they would be in a dark blue sapphire.
Madagascar has become a significant second source. Madagascan padparadschas can be extremely beautiful, often with vivid colour. However, the colour stability issue affects Madagascar stones more frequently, and buyers must insist on a modern certificate that includes stability testing. Tanzania also produces orange-pink sapphires sometimes offered as padparadscha, but these tend toward darker brownish tones that most labs would not classify as true padparadscha.
In value terms, a certified Ceylon padparadscha commands a significant premium over an equivalent Madagascar stone — often 20–50% more. If origin matters to you (and for investment purposes, it should), always buy with a GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, AGL, or GRS certificate that explicitly states the geographic origin.

Fine untreated padparadschas above 5 carats with certified Ceylon origin and confirmed colour stability are world-class collector items. They are genuinely rare — only a handful appear at major international auctions in any given year. At the 2025 Sotheby's fine jewellery auctions, an 11.14-carat Ceylon padparadscha (GIA certified, no indications of heating) appeared — a size so rare that its appearance was notable in itself.
Colour is everything. Unlike blue sapphire where vivid saturation is almost always preferred, padparadscha valuation rewards balance over intensity. The ideal stone shows a delicate, even mix of warm pink and orange — neither colour dominating. The classic description is "sunset" or "lotus blossom." Stones that tip too heavily toward orange are classified as orange sapphires; those too pink become pink sapphires. A vivid, saturated padparadscha is beautiful, but LMHC standards actually favour lighter, pastel tones, so very saturated stones may not receive a padparadscha designation from all labs.
Clarity. Padparadschas tend to have good clarity — better than ruby on average. But because the pastel colour makes inclusions more visible, eye-clean specimens command strong premiums. Any visible dark inclusion in a pastel stone significantly reduces its beauty and value.
Cut. Most padparadschas are cut in oval or cushion shapes to maximise colour and conserve carat weight. Round brilliant cuts are rarer and carry a slight premium. A well-cut stone will show colour across the whole face without a dark extinction zone at the centre. Avoid stones with obvious "windows" — pale, see-through zones visible when looking straight down through the table.
Heat treatment is widely accepted in the sapphire trade and is disclosed on all reputable laboratory certificates. A heat-treated padparadscha with a permanent, stable colour enhancement is not misrepresented — it is what most padparadschas on the market are. However, unheated padparadschas with confirmed natural colour are significantly rarer and command premiums of 50–100% or more over equivalent heated stones.
Never buy a padparadscha without a certificate. Irradiation — a fraudulent treatment that gives a temporary pink-orange colour — is sometimes used on sapphires. The resulting colour is unstable and fades with exposure to sunlight. This treatment is undetectable by eye and requires laboratory testing. Only a certificate from GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, AGL, or GRS confirming heat treatment status (and colour stability, for Madagascar stones) protects you from this fraud.
Use a 10× loupe to examine colour distribution and look for inclusions. A UV lamp can reveal treatment clues. Use a refractometer to confirm corundum (RI 1.762–1.770).
